Out Today (August 23rd), ROMANCE is Fontaines D.C.s most ambitious record yet. It’s the Dublin-made, London-based band’s first offering with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Florence and the Machine) and is without doubt their most assured, inventive, and sonically adventurous record yet. ROMANCE sees an ascent into grungier breaks, dystopian electronica, hip-hop percussion and dreamy Slowdive-esque textures that may surprise fans. The shoegaze touchpoints first pressed on Skinty Fia (#1 in the UK & Ireland) unfold here like a purpling bruise, though any “retro aesthetic”, as Grian Chatten (vocals) describes it, is left behind. “We say things on this record we’ve wanted to say for a long time.
